Cape May is home for Steve and Holly, who met at Higbee Beach, became engaged at the Cape May Point Light House and married on Steger Beach. They are the first Stegers in Steve’s family to exchange vows on Steger Beach. Steve’s family has proudly owned Steger’s Beach Service since 1933. To them, there is no better place than Cape May; the source of their livelihood, the future of their family and the beginning of a relationship as husband and wife.
Steve’s father hired Holly’s brother Kevin to work an umbrella stand and Kevin and Steve’s younger brother, Sean, had become buddies. Steve had started teaching Paddleboarding lessons over the summer and didn’t know too many people locally who had taken to the sport. Kevin had mentioned his sister also enjoyed paddle boarding and Steve realized he didn’t know her. He reached out to Holly and she agreed to meet him at Higbee Beach before he went back to college. They became lifelong friends that afternoon and dated for several years before Steve proposed to Holly.
Steve asked Holly to marry him on a rainy and unusually warm, December day. They went to one of their favorite locations, the Cape May Point lighthouse trails. As they veered off towards the duck blind, Holly didn’t notice at the time, but her brother Dylan and his girlfriend had snuck into the woods and were snapping photos. First the rain started, then a rumble of thunder and a flash of lightening; Steve knew he had to propose and quickly! They took refuge in the duck blind, Steve got down on one knee and asked Holly to marry him. Dylan was waiting with a bottle of champagne.
Holly and Steve were engaged for two years while they continued working hard on their growing careers. The happy couple knew they wanted be married on the beach. Cape May Convention Hall was second to none for their wedding. The people who work there put a lot of effort into running a tight ship! The location was a quick commute to Steger Beach, and also offered a ‘Plan B.’ In the event of inclement weather they had the option of being married in Convention Hall and on the day they said “I do,” the rain held off just long enough for us to exchange vows on Steger Beach. October is a special time, as the city permits dogs on the beach, so Holly and Steve’s Labrador Retriever was able to witness the nuptials.
Following the ceremony, the wedding party enjoyed cocktail hour on the deck at Convention Hall, enjoyed delicious food prepared by Ryan Kennedy with Executive Catering and danced the night away to the sounds of none other than Bill Smeltzer himself.
Holly and Steve felt so fortunate to utilize the talent of many local vendors. The reception was more than they could have hoped for!
